Before an identity can be protected, it must be recognised. UC-CIPO recognises a culture by eight core elements, the living foundation that 25,321 cultures across 269 countries and regions carry from generation to generation.
A culture is not a brand, a trend or a style. It is a people with a name, a tongue, a story and a way of life that persists through time.
A community that identifies itself as one. The sense of "we" comes first: a group that knows itself and names itself as a people.
A self-designation carried and recognised by its members, not a label given from outside.
An own tongue, script, or way of speaking. Language carries the memory of a culture; when it fades, identity fades with it.
A common history, ancestry, homeland or founding story that binds the community across generations.
A worldview, spirituality and moral code that guide how the community lives and decides.
The practices of life: birth, marriage, death, seasons, harvest, celebration. The rhythm that structures the year and the lifetime.
Passed from parent to child, master to apprentice, elder to youth. A culture lives only if it is handed on.
Existence over time. A culture endures; it is not a season, a market or a movement.
The eight elements are the core: they make a group a culture. The twelve identity domains are the expression: how a culture shows itself to the world in design, music, food, fashion, craft, language and more. UC-CIPO uses the core to recognise a culture and protects the expression element by element.
