‘Obviously Dangerous’: Unlicensed Jet Skis Pose Growing Hazard on Albania’s Coast
Accidents involving out-of-control jet skis in Albania are on the rise – and fines and police crackdowns don’t seem to be deterring reckless operators.
On September 11 last year, 18-year-old David’s holiday in Albania took an harrowing turn. The Czech teenager was riding a jet ski in Saranda Bay when there was an accident.
While returning to shore at low speed to pick up his mother, who was waiting to join him as a passenger, he was hit by another watercraft operated by tourists from France.
The impact left him unconscious in the water. His mother, who was filming from the pier, was shocked to see her son floating motionless on the surface, kept afloat only by his life jacket.
“My son fell into the water, remaining motionless and unconscious,” she told BIRN. David and his mother, who asked to remain anonymous, provided BIRN with the full case file, including footage showing the moment of the collision.
